Dr. Sunil Bhoyrul

Dr. Sunil Bhoyrul is the award-winning surgeon in charge of the bariatric surgery program at La Jolla Weight Management. He is a fellowship-trained specialist in laparoscopic surgery and an attending surgeon at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, and Alvarado Hospital in San Diego. Previously, Dr. Bhoyrul was the head of general surgery and surgical director of bariatric surgery at the Scripps Clinic. Each year since 2005, Dr. Bhoyrul has been selected by his peers as one of the “Best Doctors in America.” He has also been honored with San Diego’s “Top Doctor” award for 2008.
Dr. Sunil Bhoyrul is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and a fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and the American College of Surgeons. He has been educated and trained at some of the world’s finest medical institutions, including undergraduate and medical school at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, a laparoscopic surgery fellowship at the department of surgery at UC San Francisco, and a residency at Stanford University Medical Center.
Dr. Bhoyrul has contributed significant original research to the field of laparoscopic surgery, with numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals. He is co-editor of Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery, one of the first textbooks in the field. As a laparoscopic surgery specialist, Dr. Sunil Bhoyrul regularly performs Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, gastric banding surgery, colectomy, appendectomy, splenectomy, hernia repair, adrenalectomy, and other complex, minimally invasive surgical procedures.
He continues to teach surgeons nationally, and present his work at national and international meetings.
Dr. Paul Hyde

The founder of Surgical Associates of La Jolla, Dr. Paul Hyde is a board-certified general surgeon and a board member at XiMED Medical Group. He has previously served as Chief of Surgery at Scripps Memorial Hospital. Dr. Hyde has been elected San Diego’s “Top Doctor” by his peers for five years, and one of the “Best Doctors in America” from 2006 to 2007.
Dr. Paul Hyde graduated from South Africa’s University of Witwatersrand Medical School and also completed his residency in South Africa, becoming a fellow of both the College of Surgeons of South Africa and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Dr. Hyde immigrated to the United States in 1978 to train at UC San Diego, becoming board certified in 1980 and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the Society of American Gastroenterological Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), the Society of Surgeons of the alimentary Tract (SSAT), and the San Diego County Medical Society.
Dr. Paul Hyde is extremely experienced in performing a variety of complex surgical procedures, including breast surgery, pancreatic surgery, gastric surgery, and thyroid surgery, as well as laparoscopic procedures such as hernia repair, appendectomy, colon resectioning, splenectomy, and anti-reflux surgery.
As the senior surgeon in the group, Dr. Hyde continues to inspire his peers and colleagues as one of the most respected clinicians in San Diego. His clinical acumen and surgical skills have brought patients from across the world to seek his help.
Dr. Mark Sherman

Dr. Mark Sherman has enjoyed a remarkable career since joining with Surgical Associates of La Jolla in 1994. He has served as both the Chief of General Surgery as well as Chairman of the Department of Surgery during his time in practice at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. While working six years on the Board of Trustees for Scripps Health (which oversees all Scripps’ hospitals and the Scripps Clinic), he used his unique knowledge to influence and improve healthcare delivery throughout San Diego. He remains active on the board of XiMED Medical Group, and has taught as an assistant clinical professor of surgery at the UC San Diego School of Medicine since 1994. These tireless efforts have led to his selection by his peers in receiving San Diego’s “Top Doctors” award on multiple occasions.
Dr. Sherman received his undergraduate degree with honors from Stanford University and completed medical school at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. He finished his residency at the UCSD Medical Center, where he was Chief Resident in general surgery. A board-certified Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of many professional organizations, including the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT), and the San Diego chapter of the Society of General Surgeons, Dr. Sherman is frequently sought for consultation on complex and challenging cases.
In his practice, Dr. Mark Sherman focuses on advanced laparoscopy, bariatric weight loss surgery, and surgical oncology. Skilled in endocrine surgery (thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal operations) as well as complex, advanced laparoscopic techniques (colectomy, appendectomy, splenectomy, and hernia repair), he provides a unique skill while treating all of his patients like family. Gastric and pancreatic operations are performed with uncompromising skill. He remains up to date with the most advanced techniques and procedures available in order to best meet their needs.
Dr. Sherman has a reputation as an innovator and leader. His compassionate bedside manner and surgical excellence have made him a most sought after surgeon by his patients and colleagues alike.
Dr. Cheryl Olson

Dr. Cheryl Olson, a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery since 1997 has been a member of Surgical Associates of La Jolla since 1998. As an attending surgeon at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, she has also served as Section Chief for General Surgery, as President of the San Diego Society for General Surgeons, and as a member of the board of directors of XiMED Medical Group. She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and currently the Treasurer of the San Diego Chapter of the ACS.
She was honored as one of San Diego’s “Top Doctors” in 2006 and 2007, exemplifying her commitment to providing medical care of the highest standard.
After completing her undergraduate degree in biology at the University of Colorado at Boulder she received a Uniformed Services Scholarship while attending medical school at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Dr. Olson spent several years practicing in the United States Navy, serving aboard the USS Simon Lake for two years before returning for residency training at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego. Dr. Olson served as an attending surgeon at the Naval Hospital at Camp Pendleton, leaving as a Lieutenant Commander to join Surgical Associates of La Jolla in 1998.
Dr. Cheryl Olson specializes in surgical oncology, including cancers of the breast, thyroid, colon, stomach, pancreas and, skin. She also performs highly specialized treatment for intraabdominal cancers known as HIPEC. Additionally, she has significant expertise in advanced minimally-invasive laparoscopic surgical techniques including the surgical treatment of obesity (bariatric weight loss surgery).
Dr. Olson has continued her dedication to her countrymen while becoming a highly respected surgeon in La Jolla. Her dedication to surgical excellence and kind bedside manner are qualities frequently sought by her colleagues and patients.
