Laparoscopic Incisional Hernia Surgery – La Jolla, North County, and All San Diego
At Surgical Associates of La Jolla, our surgeons can repair all types of hernias, including incisional hernias, inguinal hernias, and hiatal hernias. Of these types, incisional hernias are the most challenging to treat, as the operating surgeon must carefully take into account a previous surgical wound. Fortunately, the physicians at our practice are exceptionally skilled in performing laparoscopic incisional hernia surgery on our La Jolla, North County, and San Diego-area patients. To find out whether your hernial condition can be treated through laparoscopic incisional hernia surgery, contact our practice today to schedule a private consultation.
What is an incisional hernia?
An incisional hernia typically occurs in the abdominal wall, somewhere between the breastbone and the groin, at or near the incision site of a previous surgery. Surgical incisions are typically closed with sutures, which results in tension in the muscle tissue; this tension is the most frequent cause of the weakening of the scarred muscle tissue. Any other condition or activity that places increased pressure on the abdominal area, such as heavy lifting, can also weaken the site of incision.
When the scarred muscle tissue weakens or fails to heal completely, the area is left susceptible to tearing or bulging. An incisional hernia occurs when the wall tears or bulges, and the underlying intestines or bowel protrude. Though this condition can become serious, it can normally be repaired with laparoscopic hernia surgery performed at our practice, serving La Jolla and North County San Diego.
Symptoms of Incisional Hernia
Those suffering from an incisional hernia are typically able to see a bulge protruding from the abdominal area. In most cases, the hernia is painless, but may cause considerable discomfort, especially when the area is strained due to coughing, lifting, or jumping. The hernia may retreat further into the abdominal wall if a person is lying down, and may be all the more noticeable when he or she is standing.
Sometimes, the protruding intestines or bowel can be pushed back gently into its appropriate place. In other cases, however, the hernia cannot be pushed back, indicating that the protrusion is trapped. This condition is called an incarcerated hernia and may result in nausea, vomiting, and difficulty having bowel movements. Those experiencing an incarcerated hernia may also feel sharp, intense pains.
Laparoscopic Incisional Hernia Surgery
Surgery is necessary to repair an incisional hernia. Though traditional hernia surgery calls for invasive incisions to be created to access the abdominal wall, the laparoscopic hernia surgery offered at our La Jolla, North County, and San Diego-area practice is minimally invasive and can minimize the chance of postoperative complications.
During laparoscopic hernia surgery, a tiny camera (the laparoscope) is inserted into the abdominal cavity through a tiny incision in the abdomen, which allows the surgeon to manipulate the surgical tools safely. Other miniscule incisions are created, through which surgical instruments are used to push the protruding organs back into their original position and location.
In most cases, the torn abdominal wall is repaired by attaching a synthetic mesh material to the weak muscle tissue, preventing a hernia from occurring again at or near that area. Patient with an incarcerated hernia typically require emergency surgery and an extended hospital stay.
