What is Breast Conservation Surgery?
Breast conservation surgery is the surgical removal of cancerous tissue from the breast. Also known as a lumpectomy or a partial mastectomy, it preserves as much of the breast tissue as possible. This conservative approach distinguishes it from mastectomy, which requires removal of extra breast tissue and sometimes the entire breast and underlying muscle tissue. Although breast conservation surgery is not the best option for every patient, our San Diego-based team recommends it when appropriate, since it allows our patients to have cancerous breast tissue removed without the physical and emotional recovery that often accompanies mastectomy procedures.
Candidates for Breast Conservation Surgery
The ideal candidate for conservative breast cancer surgery:
- Has just one tumor in the breast, or, if there are two or more tumors, they are close together
- Has not received radiation therapy
- Has a relatively small tumor in relation to the breast
- Does not have a medical condition that would complicate radiation therapy
Alternatives to Breast Conservation Surgery
We may recommend a mastectomy or partial breast radiation when breast conservation surgery is not the best option. The Breast Conservation Surgery Procedure
To begin the breast conservation procedure, the surgeon first administers a general anesthesia. Next, he or she removes the tumor. To determine whether the cancer has spread beyond the breast, the surgeon may also perform a sentinel node biopsy or a lymph node sampling. If the cancer has spread, additional breast tissue, underlying pectoral muscle, and lymph nodes may also need to be removed. After breast conservation surgery, the remaining breast tissue is usually treated with radiation. For patients who are candidates for partial breast radiation (brachytherapy), our team places the device that delivers this type of radiation therapy.
