DR. MARK SHERMAN: My background actually begins when I was about 4-years old and first came to California, and I've been in California ever since then. I went to undergraduate at Stanford University and—a beautiful place to live and graduated in biology with distinction up there. I’m very proud of that.

And then, I came here to San Diego. I did my medical school training down here, and then thought San Diego is a beautiful place to be and how can you beat that for surgical residency. And the residency here is actually a fantastic residency program.

Following that, I had the opportunity to join the practice here, and have been here about 14, 15 years now. I've become very involved with things here at Scripps Hospital. I have had the chance to be on the Board of Trustees here. I had a chance to see really a lot of the aspects of healthcare beyond what we do just in the operating room and have been able to utilize that information to really provide the best care for my patients.

In addition, I've worked as the Chief of Surgery at the hospital and the Chief of General Surgery at the hospital and a number of other administrative positions, as well, all of which I think have helped me provide the best care for my patients, to have the access to the best resources for my patients and ultimately have helped me become the doctor that I am and provide the surgical care and expertise that I wanted to deliver.
